Bet With Your Head
One of the first things every sports bettor wishes someone told them when they start out is to "bet with your head, and not with your heart".
It's a relatively simple theory, but when you are inexperienced and don't know any better, making a bet on your home team may seem like the smart thing to do. Most sports bettors believe they know their home teams better than other teams, but when betting on a game with your home team, people usually let their feelings get in the way.

One way to get around this is to not let yourself bet on a game with your home team in it, or to limit yourself to an action play on the game (1/4 of a standard unit). This method of restricting yourself will let you know if you really do know enough about your team to place a bet on them.
If after a while you find out you do know a good amount about your home team and the teams they play, then you can start betting a normal amount on those games. Remember however to always pick your spots, and don't bet on every game.
In the end, betting on your own team will usually be a losing proposition over the long haul for the majority of sports bettors. Mixed feelings and favoritism will work their way into your handicapping methods and ruin your hard work. Bet with your head, not with your heart.
