Baseball Betting 101

So you're interested in betting some baseball this year and aren't sure where to start... Well look no further, we've put together a comprehensive beginner's guide to betting baseball.

Moneylines, Runlines and Totals

Unlike other sports such as football and basketball, there are no spreads in baseball. Baseball bets on sides are either made on the moneyline or the runline. Betting the moneyline means that the bettor is taking a team to win the game straight up. Let's look at the example below.

Chicago Cubs +120
St Louis Cardinals -130

In this example, if you were to bet on the Cubs, you would bet $100 to win $120. If you wanted to bet on the Cardinals, you would bet $130 to win $100. If you wanted to bet the runline on the game above, it would look something like this.

Chicago Cubs +1.5 -130
St. Louis Cardinals -1.5 +120

This means that if you took the Cubs, you would have to lay $130 to win $100, and the Cubs would have to win or lose by 1 for you to win your bet. If you bet the Cardinals on the runline, you would bet $100 to win $120, and the Cardinals would have to win the game by 2 runs or more for you to win your bet.

For totals(over/under) the bettor has to choose whether he thinks the total runs in a game by both teams combined will go over or under the proposed total by the sportsbook. Most totals in baseball are usually between 7.5 and 10. The few exceptions are Coors field in Colorado(thin air) and Wrigley Field(wind). Let's use the totals example below to explain them a bit further.

Over 8 -110
Under 8 +100

If you were to bet this game on the over 8 runs, you would have to lay $110 to win $100. The two teams would have to score 9 runs or more combined for you to win the bet. If you bet the under, they need to score 7 runs or less for you to win. For the under you would be betting $100 to win $100. If the game lands on 8, all bets are refunded + the juice paid.

This information should get you started in the world of baseball betting. Pick a plan for your betting and follow through with it.
